Primas Dry Ice Blasting was instructed to clean a generator stator at a nickel smelter. The
power generator and turbine positioned at the north of the site was last shutdown and
refurbished in 2011.
The generator stator was contaminated with dry and light carbon and dirt deposits. The
substrate of the stator’s taped and painted winding coils and the laminated iron core frame
were both very brittle as a result of use, age and multiple repainting. Primas agreed with the Generator Supervisor to test clean a segment of each of these sections using typically low settings. A fragmenting attachment was also deployed in an effort to ensure that the dry ice blaster delivered the finest dry ice particles possible.
Focusing on preventing damage to the stator’s components, Primas carefully cleaned the
winding coils and iron core frame using very low dry ice and compressed air settings.
The carbon and dirt was efficiently and effectively removed from the stator’s components
without damaging its various substrates. Dry ice blasting slashed the amount of cleaning
downtime scheduled for the generator shutdown.
